Contrasting offspring responses to variation in salinity and temperature among populations of a coastal crab: A maladaptive ecological surprise?

Current understanding of species capacities to respond climate change is limited by the amount information available about intraspecific variation in responses. Therefore, we quantified between- and within- population larval performance (survival, development, growth metamorphosis) shore crab Carcinus maenas response key environmental drivers (temperature, salinity) 2 populations from regions with contrasting salinities (32-33 PSU: Helgoland, North Sea; 16-20 Kerteminde, Baltic Sea). We also accounted for effect(s) salinity experienced during embryogenesis, which differs between populations. found patterns embryonic conditions. In Helgoland population, observed a strong thermal mitigation low stress (TMLS) all indicators, when embryos were kept seawater. The negative effects on survival mitigated at increased temperatures; only high temperatures larvae exposed able sustain rates reduced developmental time, thereby metamorphosing comparable levels carbon nitrogen those reared By contrast, Kerteminde showed detrimental effect salinity, consistent maladaptive weak TMLS. Low embryogenesis pre-empted development TMLS both populations, salinity. Our study emphasises importance evaluating responses temperature across populations; existence maternal habitat should not be underestimated.
